THE
ZOEY
Project
A BLUE CLOVER COLLECTIVE INITIATIVE
Inspired by one horse.
Built for the ones still waiting.
The Story Starts With Zoey
Well... kind of.
I always knew I wanted to rescue horses.
What that looked like has gone through a few different iterations over the years. For a while, the plan was to go down to the U.S. and rescue all of the wild Mustangs before they could be killed.
You know. A small, completely reasonable goal.
And don't get me wrong - that's still a thing. The idea has just gotten a little bigger... and a little more thought out.
There's a bit of a theme across this website where I tell you just enough of the story and then make you go over to Herd on the Street for the rest.
Unfortunately, that continues here.
What I will tell you is that a rescue, in some form, was always part of the plan. A few years after I lost my first horse, Misty, I started feeling that pull to be around horses again. I wasn't looking to change my life. I didn't have some grand plan. I just wanted barn time. So, I started looking into adopting a horse. And that's how I found Zoey. And then Zoey changed the plan. The day Zoey walked off the trailer, I knew I was in over my head. She challenged pretty much everything I thought I knew about horses. She changed the way I looked at horsemanship. She changed the way I interacted with horses. And she sent me searching for answers — different trainers, different methods, and a much better understanding of how horses communicate, learn and build trust.
Turns out, when the horse standing in front of you doesn't fit neatly into what you already know, you have two choices:
Decide the horse is the problem.
Or learn more.
Zoey made me learn more. And in a lot of ways, that journey is what eventually brought me here. There is a lot more to Zoey's story - the good parts, the difficult parts, the things I got wrong and the things she taught me along the way. I want to tell that story properly, so you'll find it over on Herd on the Street.
Sadly, Zoey's story came to an end a little over a year ago.
And when I finally sat down and decided it was time to stop just talking about these ideas and actually start building toward them, there was one thing I needed:
A name for the rescue.
And really...
How could it have been anything else?
The horse who made me question what I knew.
The horse who pushed me to learn.
The horse who changed the plan.
SO, WHAT IS
THE ZOEY PROJECT?
The Zoey Project is a rescue in the making. A Plan...
I think it's important to be honest about that. We don't have a rescue facility. There isn't a pasture full of rescue horses just outside the camera frame. We're at the very beginning of building toward what I hope The Zoey Project will eventually become. But the philosophy behind it is already taking shape. I want to build a rescue centred around the individual horse - one that prioritizes safety, trust and understanding before asking “What can this horse do?” A place where horses are given the time they actually need. Where behaviour isn't automatically treated as disobedience. Where training doesn't have to rely on fear, force or intimidation. And where the goal isn't simply to rescue a horse, put some training on it and find it another home as quickly as possible. Sometimes rehabilitation might lead to adoption. Sometimes it might lead somewhere completely different. The horse gets a say in that too.
You're here early. That's kind of the point.
